my digital clock quit telling time

started showing lies

confounded confabulations cryptic codes

no matter which way I read its face

downside up

right to left

left to right

even from behind

(a rather complicated view)

I told myself

iโ€™d have to learn Hebrew

Arabic, Aramaic,

ancient Greek, Coptic

maybe some Klingon too

so I could remember what year it was

iโ€™d try a few centuries on for size

cosmologically speaking

my digital clock ainโ€™t shit

so fuck itโ€ฆ

I set arbitrary alarms

how you like me now 3:33 a.m.

blowing kisses in the dark

that last an eternity

a few weeks ago

2nd century

I was up in Alexandria

Egypt (not the girl)

Hermes Trismegistus

asked me if I knew Billy Pilgrim

told me the Tralfamadorians

was onto something

I woke up hungry in Lincoln Park Zoo

I mustโ€™ve slept right through the alarms

lion giving me the fisheye

but it wasnโ€™t quite feeding time

I only eat oatmeal for breakfast

so I walked back home &

took a nap

tomorrow iโ€™ma ask my momma

to mail me my old alarm clock

โ€œBaby Benโ€ heโ€™s cheerful

little white analog motherfucker

his numbers glow in the dark

heโ€™s got a brass halo & a little brass key

stuck in his back

he never lies to me

he only forgets the time

when I forget to rewind him
